A useful brief for your next website project

A short checklist to help turn a website idea into a clear first conversation and a workable scope.

You do not need a polished specification to start a website project. A few clear notes about the people you serve, the change you want, and the material you already have can make the first conversation much more useful.

Start with the outcome

Describe what should be easier or clearer after the site is live. That could mean helping visitors understand an offer, making it simpler to request a quote, or giving existing customers a better place to find information.

Name the people the site needs to help and the action you hope they will take. This gives design and content decisions a practical reference point.

List what exists

Gather the current site, brand files, copy, photos, domain details, and any tools the new site needs to connect to. Mark what is ready, what needs updating, and what still needs to be created.

Set useful boundaries

Note any deadlines, must-have pages, technical constraints, and who will review the work. If budget is known, sharing a range helps shape a realistic first release.

  • The main goal and audience
  • Pages or flows that matter first
  • Existing content and integrations
  • A target date and budget range
  • Who gives feedback and approval
